New Cruise Ship Pier To Open in Falmouth, Jamaica, November 2010
The $7.5 billion cruise ship pier in Falmouth, set to open in November, spells good news for the tourism industry in the town and the parish of Trelawny.
However, the soon-to-be-opened pier is causing jitters to Ocho Rios, the existing cruise capital of the country. According to Sue Morris, a representative of the National Cruise Council of Jamaica, Ocho Rios will lose 20 per cent of its cruise-ship calls in 2011.
It is believed that eight of the 19 ships that normally dock in Ocho Rios will be moving to Falmouth when the pier is opened. Morris sees this as not only an increase in competition but also as a wake-up call for Ocho Rios to improve the condition of the town and make it more tourist-friendly.
Falmouth is about ten minutes drive from Silver Sands villas. One can expect a surge in development of tourism projects in this area.
