The hurricane season runs from June to November every year.
Jamaica rarely gets hit, although, being in the Caribbean, it is regarded as a hurricane risk. After 40 years without a direct hit, Hurricane Gilbert, one of the centuries worst, struck Jamaica on 12 September 1988, wreaking havoc throughout the island.
Silver Sands
There was little damage to most houses at Silver Sands even those built right on the beach front. No one at Silver Sands at the time was injured. All of the houses at Silver Sands are built with steel-reinforced concrete blocks and steel-reinforced concrete, designed to withstand hurricane force winds. More recently, Hurricane Ivan skirted the South Coast of Jamaica, 20 miles offshore, on September 11, 2004. Hurricane Sandy struck Jamaica on 24 October 2012, making landfall on the Southeastern coast, traversing the island's Eastern parishes, causing severe damage to crops and infrastructure.
